Development Director

About Us: Feast Down East (FDE) seeks to generate economic development and increase access to healthy foods in southeastern North Carolina by strengthening the area’s local food system. The organization operates a food hub that supports small family farms by distributing their produce to wholesale buyers in the Wilmington area. Also, FDE works to reduce food insecurity in underserved communities by bringing affordable, healthy foods to residents in low-income neighborhoods.  

Position Summary: The Development Director will serve as a part-time* (15-20 hours per week) member of the FDE executive team, working to sustain the organization’s mission through the implementation of various new and improved fundraising strategies. The Development Director will work closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to manage relationships with current funders, increase revenue from existing sources, and develop and execute a plan for diversifying the organization’s revenue portfolio.

Responsibilities:

Craft a resource development plan that aligns FDE strategic plan, short- and long-term strategies for growth, and organizational mission

  • Evaluate current revenue portfolio for ways to improve performance on existing revenue streams and diversify with new ones
  • Participate actively in ongoing strategic planning processes that will determine organizational goals and strategies in the coming years
  • Support FDE staff in designing program implementation and evaluation methods that will complement resource development plans

Secure new and renewed grant funding

  • Work with Executive Director to strengthen relationships with existing grant funders (private and corporate foundations) and assist with reapplication processes and reporting
  • Research new sources of potential grant funding and evaluate for alignment with resource development plan
  • Write grant applications for submission to potential new funders

Increase profitability of recurring and new community events

  • Plan and execute the annual Raise the Barn benefit dinner, with a primary focus on increasing the number of major sponsors
  • Assist in planning the annual Local Food Conference, including soliciting sponsorships
  • Identify opportunities to offer additional community events for engagement and fundraising purposes

Cultivate individual donors and increase overall community awareness

  • Work with Executive Director to develop communications and marketing plans that raise general awareness about FDE and the need for public support
  • Create an FDE annual report (to be published in early 2019)
  • Develop giving campaigns or similar strategies for increasing the number of individual contributions
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with donors that result in recurring and major gifts

Requirements/skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Proven track record in nonprofit development – grant writing, event planning, donor cultivation
  • Passion for the mission of Feast Down East and the populations we serve
  • Team-oriented work style; the ability to work collaboratively or independently as needed
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and maintain attention to detail in a busy environment
  • Strategic thinking and analytical evaluation
  • Excellent communication skills – written, verbal/interpersonal

* This position has the potential to grow into a broader role with the organization, possibly as a full-time position, pending the acquisition of additional funding. Therefore, candidates with complementary nonprofit administration skills will be given priority consideration. Potential areas of expertise might be:
